I came across a man with two large dogs in a local park and decided that I would take a few photographs of the owner and his pets. The images came out blurry due to the lack of time that I have to photograph the subjects. I have thought about it and i believe that the man and his dogs looked like locals and I will try to go out at the same time that I did last time to capture this same image but sharper.

I have noticed that Hugo's photographs have a border around most of them, I will use this technique as well, to emulate his style. I will be putting my own twist on the images by photographing the connection between the dog and its owner instead of the way that Hugo photographed the travelling group.

Dogs and their owners

After I showed the first of my 'dog and owner' images to a small group of students from my course, there was a few points that I noted down from their feedback. The first being that the image was not straight on, I had noticed this in Hugo's work because all of his photographs are straight on with a full view of the Hyena and the owner/ handler. I knew that this was the case when I took the photograph but was unable the front on photograph that was desired. I will make sure that the set up for my next images are better and conform to the typical Hugo's photograph.

Another point from the feedback sessions is that the background of Pieter Hugo's photographs  are quite dull, full of clouds and quite cold looking. I will try to make this similar in my photographs by choosing the right time of day but this is not something that I am worried about. The thing that I am wanting to focus some attention on is the cropping/ set up of the photograph when taking it. 

Feedback Session

After showing the group of students from my course some of Pieter Hugo's photographs, I have realised that I want to focus on Hugo's other set of photographs 'THE HYENA AND OTHER MEN'. This was pointed out to me as a feasible idea because I have thought that I can substitute the hyena with a dog and I will photograph the connection between the dog and the owner. I will do this in local parks around where I live.


I produced and showed the group of my peers a slideshow that gave examples of the hyenas and other men project in order to see if they thought it was a feasible idea. 

Dogs and their owners

I have decided to focus my assignment on a similar idea as Pieter Hugo's 'men with hyena's' series of photographs. Due to circumstances I have decided to photograph dogs and their owners, trying to show the connection between the two. This is similar to the connection between the men and the hyenas but the photographs that I will take will show the animal as a pet instead of a way of life. 
The reason why i have decided to focus on this part of hugos work is due to the fact that there is nothing that is similar to the circumstances of his work around the area where I live and due to the time scale it would be more worthwhile for me to focus on an are where I will be able to excel. I am also more drawn in and interested by this topic.
Below are a few photographs that I took in response to my new topic. This helped me to progress the idea and I have not chose to use the below photographs due to the fact that they dont have the same look as Pieter Hugos. The photographs are too dark and you can not make out the silhouette of the dogs and the owners.
